Since 2001, through a combination of conferences, speaker series, summer academies, and award-winning service and leadership courses, The Institute for Civic Leadership has transformed the lives and futures of over 10,000 young people, and exponentially more through student service projects.
This incredible programming is embedded in AES, from crafting mission statements with world-renowned performance psychologist & author Dr. Jim Loehr to ICL’s revolutionary leadership curriculum and courses, service project guidance, plus regular SEL offerings like MindUP Mondays from the Goldie Hawn Foundation.
AES´s unique and unparalleled program guides students to a life of purpose, service, and excellence.
Leadership Service Learning Projects
Our Leadership course teaches students how to lead with purpose and to enact positive change within the community.
Learning Communities/Meetups
ICL’s project-based electives create learning communities and peer-to-peer mentoring and collaborations. In 2021-2022, ICL will have several Meetups planned across the country!
Orientation: Personal Mission Statement and Ikigai
At ICL we use Ikigai to help students create personal mission statements from their passions. The word “Ikigai” stems from two Japanese words, iki (meaning life) and kai (pronounced “gai” meaning effect, result, worth, benefit.) The word translated to English roughly means “thing that you live for” or “the reason for being.”
Student Ambassadors
Student Ambassadors welcome new students and families to ICL’s unique community. Our student Ambassadors help and lead outreach efforts.
Honors Society
The National Honor Society (NHS) elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, leadership, service and character.
We challenge all of our students to ‘dare to dream’, have the courage to take risks, and to show leadership through action!
MindUp Mondays
Based firmly in neuroscience, MindUP teaches the skills and knowledge students need to regulate their stress and emotion, form positive relationships, and act with kindness and compassion.
ICL Champion and Partner Webinars
Experts and master champions provide exceptional and unparalleled mentorship to our students through interactive webinars, project-based electives, personalized for virtual coaching, and ‘live meetups’.
Advisories
Peer-to-peer connections occur naturally in our Advisory system. Students meet ICL students from different academies and from all over the world.
Badges and Effort System
The ICL Academy Effort System is based on the fundamental idea that effort, goal-setting, and motivation play a critical role in students’ academic success by promoting the development of diligence, persistence, and mindfulness.
